One of the largest European producers of recycled polyolefin
Imerys is one of the largest European producers of recycled polyolefin compounds in Europe through its subsidiary, ImerPlast UK Ltd.
Many of the processes involved in recycling plastics are similar to those involved in our core business, the production of industrial minerals.
As with mineral production, in the recycling business we have to:
- understand and quantify the quality of the feed
- ensure a reliable supply and constantly monitor the quality of incoming raw material
- grind the feed and remove impurities
If necessary we blend material from different sources to ensure a consistent / target product properties and then test final product quality and color before sending to secondary processors.
Given these similarities-and given that we had already discovered and developed a unique technology for the compatibilization of mixed polyolefins back in 2008-we took the decision to invest in a new recycling facility and then to expand that capability in 2017 with the acquisition of UK based recyclers, Regain Polymers.
We purchase baled, post-consumer mixed polyolefin (MPO) waste as well as sorted PE, PP and PS, as well as some post-industrial material, which we reprocess to exacting standards in order to displace virgin resin from engineered applications.
Bringing plastics full circle
By employing the latest technologies at all stages of the process-analysis of incoming raw materials, sorting, grinding, washing, blending and compounding-and through the use of our unique additive packages, we can improve the properties of recycled plastics to make our compounds behave like virgin polymers suitable for a wide range of end-use applications.
Based in Allerton Bywater, West Yorkshire, and Gothers, Cornwall, ImerPlast UK Ltd has now grown to become one of Europe's leading plastic recyclers, currently operating a circa 50,000 T compounding site.
ImerPlast UK Ltd is an Environment Agency licensed site, with accreditation to generate Packaging Recovery Notes (PRNs) under the Packaging Waste Regulations 1997.
